        Understanding Plasmalogens

      What Are Plasmalogens?

Plasmalogens are a vital class of phospholipids crucial for building cell membranes in the body. Their unique chemical structure, featuring a vinyl ether linkage at the sn-1 position of the glycerol backbone, grants them special properties essential for various functions, especially in the nervous system. These molecules are predominantly present in the brain, heart, lungs, eyes, and kidneys, comprising a significant portion, around 20%, of brain tissue. Beyond their structural role, plasmalogens act as key antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, playing a pivotal role in maintaining overall health and promoting longevity. Moreover, they are critically involved in nerve function, highlighting their indispensable nature in supporting neural processes and overall well-being.

      What Do Plasmalogens Do?

Plasmalogens play a multifaceted role in supporting various physiological functions essential for overall health. They serve as powerhouses for our nerves, driving movements, thoughts, and vital processes like heartbeat and breathing. Additionally, plasmalogens contribute significantly to membrane integrity, fluidity, and cell signaling, while also acting as potent antioxidants. Their unique ability to restore and optimize cellular functions requiring high levels of omega-9, such as in brain white matter, myelin, and heart membranes, is crucial for maintaining cellular health and functionality. Moreover, plasmalogens support functions reliant on DHA, such as in brain gray matter, neuron function, and neuromuscular synaptic activity, thereby aiding in preventing neurodegeneration. Furthermore, they facilitate reverse cholesterol transport, reduce amyloid formation, improve cognition, enhance mobility, and mitigate lipid peroxidation, collectively contributing to overall well-being and longevity.

      Frequently Asked Questions

      Why do I need Plasmalogens?

Our bodies naturally produce plasmalogens, unique lipid molecules essential for the proper functioning of nerve, heart, lung, eye, and kidney cells. However, as we age or face health issues, our ability to produce these critical molecules diminishes. This decline can lead to a host of issues, from cognitive impairment to weakened overall bodily function.

Diet alone can't solve this problem because plasmalogens are degraded in the gut.

That’s where ProdromeNeuro comes in. It provides a bioavailable omega-3 plasmalogen precursor, helping to restore and optimize plasmalogen levels in the brain, supporting cognitive function and long-term neurological health.

      How is ProdromeGlia made?

ProdromeGlia is made using a patented process that combines purified oleic acid with a synthesized plasmalogen precursor backbone to create a stable and bioavailable oil.

      What happens in our lab:

      • Purifying Oleic Acid: Oleic acid (an omega-9 fatty acid) is extracted from organic high oleic acid sunflower meal. The sunflower oil is broken down to separate the oleic acid from its glycerol backbone. The oleic acid is then washed and purified to remove trace metals, organic contaminants, and microbiological impurities.
      • Synthesizing the Plasmalogen Precursor Backbone: Unlike animal-derived sources, the plasmalogen precursor backbone is created from scratch in a pure form.
      • Combining the Components: The purified oleic acid is attached to the plasmalogen precursor, forming ProdromeGlia oil.
      • Final Purification & Packaging: Before bottling or encapsulation, the oil undergoes further purification to remove oxygen and water molecules, ensuring maximum purity and resistance to oxidation.

      How is ProdromeNeuro made?

ProdromeNeuro is made using a patented process that combines purified omega-3 DHA with a synthesized plasmalogen precursor backbone to create a stable and bioavailable oil.

      What happens in our lab:

      • Purifying Omega-3 DHA: Omega-3 DHA is extracted from algae oil. The oil is broken down to separate the DHA from its glycerol backbone. The DHA is then washed and purified to remove free fatty acids, organic contaminants, and any environmental impurities.
      • Synthesizing the Plasmalogen Precursor Backbone: Unlike animal-derived sources, the plasmalogen precursor backbone is created from scratch in a pure form using Dr. Goodenowe’s patented process.
      • Combining the Components: The purified DHA is carefully attached to the plasmalogen precursor, forming ProdromeNeuro oil.
      • Final Purification & Packaging: Before bottling or encapsulation, the oil undergoes further purification to ensure maximum purity, removing any potential environmental contaminants.

All steps are performed in our own cGMP-certified manufacturing facility in Temecula, CA, USA, to ensure quality and safety.

The finished product does not contain any algae oil—only the purified DHA.

What is the difference between ProdromeNeuro and ProdromeGlia?

ProdromeNeuro and ProdromeGlia are both dietary supplements that are synthetically pure, vegan plasmalogen precursors. The difference between the two lies in their fatty acid composition and targeted area of effect within the body.

ProdromeNeuro is an omega-3 (DHA) plasmalogen precursor that targets gray matter in the brain. DHA is extracted and purified from plant-based triglycerides and attached to a plasmalogen precursor backbone. This process makes ProdromeNeuro™ bioidentical to naturally occurring DHA plasmalogen precursors; however, there are no natural vegetarian sources that offer sufficient purity or concentration for practical use. DHA plasmalogens are found in high concentrations in the membranes of gray matter and are necessary for neuron and neuromuscular synaptic function. They are also involved in reverse cholesterol transport and maintaining low brain amyloid levels.

ProdromeGlia is an omega-9 (oleic acid) plasmalogen precursor that targets white matter in the brain. Like ProdromeNeuro, it is bioidentical to naturally occurring oleic acid plasmalogen precursors but cannot be practically derived from natural vegetarian sources. The oleic acid used to make ProdromeGlia is extracted and purified from plant-based triglycerides. White matter is largely made up of myelin, which requires high levels of omega-9 plasmalogens to function.

Both plasmalogen precursors are manufactured in a cGMP facility in Temecula, CA, USA

How do I decide between ProdromeNeuro or ProdromeGlia?

To help you choose between ProdromeNeuro and ProdromeGlia, consider the following:

Your age: Plasmalogen levels naturally decline after the age of 50. ProdromeNeuro and ProdromeGlia can help support cellular health, protect against oxidative stress, and ensure proper cell membrane function.

Your cognitive health: People with dementia experience a rapid decline in plasmalogens, particularly omega-3 plasmalogens. If you are concerned about cognitive decline, you may want to consider ProdromeNeuro.

Your overall health: White matter degeneration can affect many neurological functions, including movement, sensation, and thinking. If you are concerned about the health of your myelin and white matter, you may want to consider ProdromeGlia.

      Evaluating Your Needs

It is important to note that plasmalogen deficiencies may vary from person to person. We recommend taking the ProdromeScan blood test, developed by Dr. Goodenowe, to measure your plasmalogen levels. This test can help you to determine which type of plasmalogen precursor would be most beneficial for you.

While we recommend taking the blood test, it is not required when trying Prodrome plasmalogen products.  Many people take ProdromeNeuro in the morning because it has a slightly stimulating effect and ProdromeGlia in the evening because it has a calming effect.

It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the best course of action for your individual needs. They can help you evaluate your health history and make recommendations based on your specific circumstances.

How are your Prodrome Plasmalogen products different from others?

Other plasmalogen products available are typically derived from animal sources and contain very low concentrations of plasmalogens. For example, one product provides just 0.5mg of plasmalogen per capsule (30mg per bottle), while another contains 4mg per capsule (240mg per bottle). In contrast, Prodrome Plasmalogen products offers a significantly higher concentration, with 900mg of plasmalogens per serving and 27,000mg per bottle—delivering more in a single serving than other products offer in an entire bottle.

Additionally, our ProdromeNeuro and ProdromeGlia products are plasmalogen precursors, specifically formulated by Dr. Goodenowe for optimal absorption and bioavailability. These precursors are designed to bypass gut degradation, allowing them to quickly and effectively restore plasmalogen levels in the body.

What time of day should I take Plasmalogens? Can I take with food or other supplements?

You can take ProdromeNeuro and ProdromeGlia at any time of day. They can be taken with or without food. They can be taken with any other supplements.

However, many prefer taking ProdromeNeuro in the morning and ProdromeGlia in the evening.

How much Plasmalogen Supplement should I take? Do I have to keep taking it every day?

The recommended dose is 900mg each day. Some individuals prefer taking a loading dose of 2-4x the daily dose for 1 to 3 months. It is recommended to continue taking the plasmalogen supplement every day. Always consult your healthcare provider to determine what is best for you.

Are your products tested for purity and contaminants?

Yes, we test our products using a third-party lab.

Where should I store the products? What is the shelf life?

Our softgel capsules can be stored at room temperature in a cool, dry place before and after opening. The shelf life is 24 months. Please check the product packaging for the latest information.

Are your supplements vegan, non-gmo, organic?

Our plasmalogen oil supplements are vegan, however the softgels are not vegan as the soft gel capsule is made with gelatin. They are not certified non-GMO but the ingredients are all non-GMO. They are not certified organic.

Why does ProdromeNeuro have a strong taste and smell?

ProdromeNeuro Oil may have a "fishy" smell or taste due to the Omega-3, which is sourced from purified algae.

Why do ProdromeNEURO softgels contain Clove Oil?

ProdromeNeuro products contain clove oil because it preserves the freshness of the DHA.

Does ProdromeNeuro have to be refrigerated at all times?

ProdromeNeuro softgels should be stored at room temperature in a cool, dry place. It is fine to store them in the fridge or freezer for long term storage, but it is not necessary.

ProdromeNeuro plasmalogen liquid oil should be stored in the refrigerator when received and after opening to preserve freshness. The cold chain does not have to be maintained strictly and can be transported at room temperature.

What is Myelin and What Does lt Have to Do With Plasmalogens?

Your nervous system is like a high-speed internet network, with nerve fibers (axons) acting as cables that carry signals between your brain, spinal cord, and the rest of your body. These signals control everything from movement and reflexes to thoughts and memory.

Myelin is a protective coating that wraps around these nerve fibers—similar to the insulation on electrical wires. Without this insulation, signals can get lost or slow down, leading to problems with movement, thinking, or even basic body functions.

      Why is Myelin Important?

      • Keeps signals strong and fast – Without myelin, nerve signals weaken or get disrupted, like a bad Wi-Fi connection.
      • Protects nerves from damage – Myelin shields nerve fibers from harmful stress and wear.
      • Helps your brain and body communicate – Every time you move, think, or feel something, nerve impulses travel through these myelin-covered pathways.

The Role of Plasmalogens in Myelin

Myelin is made up of special fats called plasmalogens, which help keep it strong and functional. Your body relies on specific cells—oligodendrocytes in the brain and Schwann cells in the rest of the nervous system—to build and repair myelin. These cells produce omega-9 plasmalogens, which are essential for myelin health.

ProdromeGlia provides omega-9 plasmalogen precursors, supporting the cells that maintain and repair myelin—helping keep your nerve signals clear, fast, and reliable.
